Liposuction

Liposuction (“lipoplasty” or “suction assisted lipectomy”) remains one of the top cosmetic procedures in the country, as it can greatly improve your overall body contour by sculpting specific problematic areas. This is done through the removal of unwanted excess pockets of fat. Dr. Grazer performs liposuction to enhance various areas, including the:

  • Breast or chest areas
  • Back and flanks
  • Abdomen and waist (Muffin Top)

Liposuction Before and After

Dr. Grazer’s father, Frederick M. Grazer, M.D., is credited for introducing liposuction to the United States in 1982, and for developing a number of instruments used in the procedure. Over time, liposuction has evolved and benefited from refinements. There are now multiple lipoplasty techniques available, each with a unique fat removal purpose. During your consultation with Dr. Grazer, he will discuss the options you have and will determine which method is right for you. This is based on the amount and placement of excess fat on your body, your goals and his recommendations for achieving the best results.

In general, the fat is removed through a small hollow tube – a cannula. It will be gently inserted in one or more tiny incisions near the area that is to be treated. Dr. Grazer does his best to ensure minimal scarring as the incisions are placed inconspicuously within the natural skin folds or contour lines. The length of time in surgery will vary with each patient, as it depends on how many areas are being targeted. The extent of the patient’s condition, how much excess fat is to be suctioned, and the addition of other procedures performed with liposuction also determines the length in surgery. Liposuction usually takes between one and four hours, and is typically done on an outpatient basis. The length of the recovery period will also depend on the aforementioned factors. On average, most people can return to work a few days after surgery and resume their normal activities in about two weeks.

Liposuction Before and After

Liposuction is intended to enhance the body by slimming certain areas. It is not designed to replace the natural methods of weight loss. Those who have attempted to lose weight through diet and exercise, but are left with resistant fat pockets, benefit most from liposuction. Ideal candidates should have firm, elastic skin, and be physically and psychologically healthy, with realistic goals and expectations. Although liposuction may improve the appearance of cellulite (dimpling of the skin, especially on women's hips and thighs), it is not an effective treatment for this condition.

Liposuction can also be performed in conjunction with other aesthetic plastic surgery procedures for optimal reshaping results. For example, tummy tuck surgery (“abdominoplasty”) is commonly done in combination with liposuction for a slimmer abdominal profile. This combination of procedures can effectively help to restore a woman to her pre-pregnancy body (See “Mommy Makeover” procedure).
