Breast Enhancement

Breast augmentation (also called “augmentation mammaplasty”) and breast lift surgery (also called “mastopexy”) are cosmetic procedures that enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. Breast augmentation uses either saline or silicone-gel filled implants to add youthful volume and improve the shape of the breasts. The breast lift eliminates excess skin and repositions the nipples to a higher and more youthful position. These procedures are commonly performed at the same time. Typically, the best candidate for these procedures has the following:

Liposuction Before and After
  • Sagging breasts or volume loss from pregnancy, weight loss or aging
  • Nipples that point downward or fall below the breast crease
  • Naturally small breasts
  • Asymmetrical breasts

Liposuction Before and After

A breast augmentation with a breast lift is a popular choice among women who have had children since both volume loss and sagging often result from pregnancy and breast feeding. Many women also choose to add other body contouring procedures, such as a tummy tuck and/or liposuction for a complete “Mommy Makeover.”

Patients can achieve a customized result with any of these procedures because of the many options available. With breast augmentation, patients can choose an incision location either around the areola (peri-areolar), beneath the breast along the crease (inframammary) or in the armpit (axilla). There are many different implant sizes, styles and projections that the patient can choose from, as well as implant placement above or below the muscle. Based on physical anatomy and your desired results, Dr. Grazer will provide you with his expert recommendations.

Breast Lift

Liposuction Before and After

Those patients who choose the breast lift as a stand-alone procedure will have the type of lift based on how much sagginess (ptosis) they have in their breasts. They may need a slight, moderate, or substantial lift depending on the extent of correction needed. For a slight breast lift, one incision is made completely around the areola to remove what looks like a donut shape of skin (often called a “donut” incision) and the remaining breast skin and the nipple are tailored to provide a youthful lift. A moderate breast lift involves the same incision in addition to a vertical incision from the base of the nipple to the breast crease (often called a “lollipop” incision). A substantial breast lift involves both of these incisions with the addition of a third incision that is located in the lower breast crease (often called an “anchor” or “inverted-T” incision).

Recovery from these procedures typically takes two weeks. Most of the swelling will subside after the first few weeks but will take several months to obtain the ultimate shape. Patients are usually instructed to wear a sports bra that opens in the front after surgery for six weeks. Patients should avoid bending and heavy lifting during the first month after surgery, and they can resume exercise after three weeks after a breast augmentation and four to six weeks after a lift.

Although the results with breast augmentation and breast lift surgery are long lasting, they do not stop the aging process or prevent changes from occurring. Pregnancy and significant weight gain or loss may impact the results of your newly enhanced shape along with natural aging.

Breast augmentation can give you the fullness of your breasts you desire. A breast lift with or without augmentation will return the fullness to your breast and give you a more perky look. Both of these procedures are performed in our adjacent AAAASF approved surgery center, The Newport Coast Outpatient Surgery Center.
